I was struck by some sculptures by Californian artist Nuala Creed depicting the endearing body language of little children. I found it fascinating how much personality and character can come through without the face. When I started on these I had no idea where they were going but amazingly, by some subliminal force, they turned out to be my little darlings, Marcus and Milly, at two and three and a half. Milly proved the naughtiest in this creation!

The use of recycled materials is fundamental to Corr’s art practice to protest the environmental impact of a modern culture that readily consumes and disposes in the pursuit of convenience. Weaving together recycled man-made and natural materials Corr explores the balance between nature and man wondering if one will ever obliterate the other. Nature has immense power and adaptability but man may have found the perfect weapon of mass destruction – plastic.

As an architectural model-maker in a previous life, the understanding of the contours of a geography is both relevant and fascinating.
The vertical contours of Avalon Beach have been doubled to increase the drama of the village and its surrounds. I sculpt mainly using pods, spent fruits and the twigs or branches of the eucalyptus species. Initially as jewellery, they have evolved into larger, free-standing and independent pieces of art.

This piece has morphed into something outside its original intention. An innocent newspaper cutting given to me by a UK friend who thought it worth sculpting grew to symbolise an unexpected event. In life we all hit a brick wall at some point. Sometimes the grass looks greener on the other side.  Other interpretations are most welcome, feel free to pass them on.

Working across a range of media including drawing, ceramics and installation I respond to our natural environment…. its essence, beauty, power and fragility….and how our identity is shaped by it.

‘Watercourse’ comprises ‘pools’ flowing one to the other. Numbering about ‘three score and ten’ each is unique, reminiscent of other carriers of life: seed pods, seashells or a coolamon, the indigenous vessel used by women to carry food and cradle babies. Each ‘pool’ captures a moment in time, but is part of a whole, moving on relentlessly with gravity and the flow of time.

A request from my husband to create a beautiful feminine bust for our home was my initial inspiration for this work. However, once I started, the work evolved in a unique way and the neck, face and expression became my focus. Living on the beautiful Northern Beaches truly feels like’ heaven on earth’ to me and the sun is a very real and powerful part of our lives.  I hope that my strong, meditative woman reflects the joy and celebration of all the elements -sun, moon and stars – on the beaches and everywhere!
